I design circuit boards and keep the systems around them secure.

At Continuous Solutions, a Portland electric-motor R&D company, that means PCB work, board bring-up, and a LAN-only engineering intranet under CMMC Level 2. The rest here is my own: RF amplifiers, flex PCBs, a treat dispenser for my dogs.

RF amplifier, from simulation to measured board

A discrete RF amplifier designed against explicit gain and bandwidth targets. I simulated it in ADS and SPICE, laid out the board in KiCad with 50 ohm matching and short, continuous return paths, assembled the SMD and through-hole parts by hand, then characterized the result on a Keysight PNA-X and a spectrum analyzer.

Polyimide stackups, bend radius rules, stiffeners, coverlay, and the DFM constraints flex fabs actually enforce. Finished panels were verified electrically with VNA measurements.

Electric bike retrofit

A standard bicycle converted to electric assist: BLDC hub motor, VESC controller, a lithium-ion pack with battery management, and regenerative braking. I tuned it over several rounds of road testing.

An ESP32 device that dispenses treats remotely or on a schedule: servo-driven auger, MQTT over WiFi, app control, and a sensor that reports when the hopper runs low.

I've spent about six years in electrical engineering, mostly on hardware: PCB design, prototyping, and board bring-up. I work at Continuous Solutions, a Portland company that develops and tests electric motors and power systems. The company runs on SBIR and STTR contracts, some of them with university and national-lab partners, including Purdue.

The job has pulled me in two directions. One is project management: I'm the project manager for our engineering team, which in practice means assigning and tracking tasks, running weekly check-ins and monthly risk reporting, and raising problems early with a proposed fix attached. The other is infrastructure: our contracts require CMMC Level 2 preparedness, so I keep the engineering intranet running on NGINX, Gitea, and Baserow and manage the Docker host and the FortiGate firewall. I also wrote the company's AI usage SOP.

The part I like is the build: layout, assembly, bring-up, and test. Every project on this page went through that at my bench.

Away from the bench I'm usually 3D printing, doing yard work, or hiking with my dogs, who are the reason the treat dispenser exists.
